Discover the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy

June 25, 2024

Presentation slides

In March 2024, the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office) released the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy, setting an actionable vision and comprehensive approach to accelerating the deployment of a world-class, zero-emission freight network in the U.S. Developed by the Joint Office and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in collaboration with the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the strategy aims to help align, unlock, and unleash cross-sector investments in zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (ZE-MHDV) infrastructure and bolster electric grid and hydrogen planning needed to achieve a zero-emission freight network by 2040.

This webinar offered:

  • A walkthrough of the strategy from its original architects.

  • Data that informed the strategy development.

  • Industry commitments and key milestones toward corridor buildout.

  • Input on the strategy to shape future phases.

Webinar panelists:

  • Kevin Miller, Senior Advisor for Business Models, Joint Office of Energy and Transportation

  • Michael Laughlin, Technology Manager, Technology Integration Program, Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO)

  • Alycia Gilde, National Manager for ZEV Partnerships and Engagement, Technology Integration Program, Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO)

  • Ben Gould, Technology Manager, Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, U.S. Department of Energy

  • Kang-Ching Jean Chu, Data and Analysis, Joint Office of Energy and Transportation

Key Takeaways

  • The National Zero-Emission Freight (ZEF) Corridor Strategy seeks to align and accelerate cross-sector investments in zero-emission medium- and –heavy-duty vehicle infrastructure and clearly signal the need to bolster electric grid and hydrogen planning to achieve a zero-emission freight network by 2040.
  • The four-phased strategy for a national ZEF network includes establishing hubs, connecting hubs, expanding corridor connections, and achieving a national network by linking regional corridors for ubiquitous access.
  • The White House regularly updates the ZEF Strategy to reflect the best available data, anticipate market needs, and support long-term sustainability.
