Monthly EV Minute: Based on September 2024 Data

Welcome back to our monthly update series that provides the latest developments on EV sales, EV user satisfaction, and EV charging growth based on comprehensive, nationally recognized data sources.

We have passed the mark of a million PEVs sold in 2024, earlier than in 2023!

Below are the key take-aways from latest available information.

EV Sales for September 2024

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) sales continue to grow. PEVs include both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). As of the end of September 2024, a total of 1,137,505 PEVs were sold this year, up 7.8% year over year.

  • For context, at the end of September 2023, cumulative PEV sales were 1,054,317. In other words, 83,000 more PEVs have sold in 2024 than at this same time last year.

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) captured 10.5% of total light duty vehicle (LDV) sales in September 2024.  PEVs were 9.4% of annual passenger vehicle sales in 2023, up from 6.8% in the annual sale of 2022.

  • A total of 122,773 PEVs (104,343 BEVs and 18,430 PHEVs) were sold during September 2024 in the United States, down 13.7% from the sales in September 2023.

  • A total of 1,169,908 light-duty vehicles were sold in the United States during September 2024, down 12.8% from the sales in September 2023.

  • In total, over 5.8 million PEVs have been sold since 2010.

EV Consumer Interest, Availability, and Affordability

Carvana reported that the EV share of make-model searches on Carvana.com has grown in every quarter of 2024, and the EV share of vehicle page views grew by 226% year-over-year in Q3 2024, demonstrating consumer interest in used EVs.

Charger Growth

  • From September 1 to September 30, an additional 3,713 public charging ports came online, representing a 1.9% increase in our national charging network.

  • There are more than 201,000 charging ports available across every state in more than 73,000 locations as of today.
