Webinar: Demo of AFLEET Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Emissions Tool

May 3, 2023

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office) hosted a webinar on the Alternative Fuel Life Cycle Environmental and Economic Transportation (AFLEET) Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Emissions Tool for use in corridor project proposals to the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program (CFI Program). Argonne National Laboratory created the AFLEET-CFI Emissions Tool, a spreadsheet tool that estimates well-to-wheel greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle operation air pollutant emissions specifically for corridor project proposals to FHWA's CFI Program.

Panelists:

  • Neelam Patel, FHWA
  • Andrew Burnham, principal environmental scientist, Argonne National Laboratory.

Key takeaways

  • The use of the AFLEET tool is required under the CFI corridor program. Applicants to the CFI community program may use AFLEET if they choose to, but it is not required.
  • The tool was designed as a standalone tool to estimate greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions for corridor applications to the FHWA’s CFI Program.
  • The tool covers six charger/station types and estimates well-to-wheel greenhouse gas emissions. In this tool, a charger is defined as a device with one or more charging ports and connectors for charging EVs.
  • Utilization is a key factor in driving the estimate of reductions for these chargers and stations.
