Dec. 3, 2024
Welcome back to our monthly update series that provides the latest developments on EV sales, EV user satisfaction, and EV charging growth based on comprehensive, nationally recognized data sources.
Below are the key take-aways from the latest available information.
EV Sales for October 2024
Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) sales continue to grow. PEVs include both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). As of the end of October 2024, a total of 1,269,949 PEVs have been sold this year so far. EV sales this year continue to outperform last year’s EV sales as well as overall light-duty sales growth.
- For context, at the end of October 2023, cumulative PEV sales amounted to 1,168,573 vehicles sold. In other words, 101,376 (or about 9%) more PEVs have sold in 2024 than at this same time last year.
Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) captured 10.0% of total light duty vehicle (LDV) sales in October 2024. PEVs were 9.4% of annual passenger vehicle sales in 2023, up from 6.8% of annual sales in 2022.
- A total of 132,799 plug-in vehicles (112,419 BEVs and 20,380 PHEVs) were sold during October 2024 in the United States, up 16.2% from October 2023.
- A total of 1,325,263 light-duty vehicles (247,673 cars and 1,077,590 light trucks) were sold in the United States during October 2024, up 10.6% from the sales in October 2023.
- Cumulatively, over 6 million PEVs have been sold in the United States to date.

EV Consumer Interest, Availability, and Affordability
New EV models give drivers more options and help drive sales. The Honda Prologue and the Chevrolet Equinox, introduced in April and May 2024 respectively, have entered the top 10 best selling PEVs in October. The Equinox was fourth, behind the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 and Hyundai IONIQ5. The Prologue was sixth with the Tesla Cybertruck sitting in between these relatively new entrants.

Infrastructure Access Improves
Existing EV models are also gaining more charging choices. The JD Power EV Index for November reports an increased infrastructure score due to more vehicle OEMs (Volvo and Polestar) gaining access to the Tesla charging network. More consumers are using public charging as more stations open.
