First NEVI-Funded Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Michigan Opens

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office) is excited to announce the opening of Michigan’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging station funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. The station in Lansing will house 6 DC fast chargers and is conveniently located off of I-96—a key travel corridor across the state.

The 6 new fast charging ports awarded to Rivian will add to the growing EV charging infrastructure in Michigan. Located at a Meijer grocery store, the station will allow EV driving residents and visitors to charge up while they shop or explore the area. To accommodate all user needs, one of the chargers is a “pull-through” design, meaning it is able to serve larger electrified vehicles or vehicles pulling trailers. Notably, this station in Lansing is one of the first Rivian Adventure Network locations available for all EV drivers to use, building out the promise of the NEVI program to ensure that any user can use any federally funded station location. Rivian plans to make future Adventure Network stations available to all vehicles as well.

“Michigan is an important automotive center in America, and the state’s first NEVI-funded charging station opens up new mobility options for Americans,” said Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office. “Building NEVI-funded charging stations in convenient locations boosts local economic development and provides Michiganders with easy options to charge in their community, giving more Americans the confidence to choose electric.”

In early 2024, the Michigan Infrastructure Office (MIO) announced MDOT’s award of nearly $23 million to support the installation of 40 universal, fast charging stations across the state. The funding supports Michigan’s goal to reduce emissions and provide a reliable charging network for EV users statewide. In total, Michigan will receive $110 million in NEVI Formula Program funding through 2026, which will help fund the installation of over 100 fast charging stations throughout the state of Michigan. Seven additional NEVI stations are currently in the design phase, with installation and public use expected in early 2025.

The Joint Office is working with all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico to ensure the success of the NEVI program. NEVI is a concerted effort to ensure that those who choose an EV benefit from a network that is thoughtfully planned, efficiently built, and meets the needs of all Americans, regardless of where they live.
