FHWA Announces Round 7 Alternative Fuel Corridor Designations

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced the 2023 Round 7 Alternative Fuel Corridor (AFC) designations. FHWA, Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, and the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office), reviewed and evaluated nominations based on the information specified in the Round 7 Request for Nominations. By adding new corridors, connections to previously designated highways will expand, increasing coverage of alternative fuels across the country.

Round 7 designations include: 

EV Charging: designations in 11 states, American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and Puerto Rico. 
Hydrogen: designations in 13 states. 
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): designations in one state. 
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): no designations. 
Propane: designations in one state.

This round of designations is important to the progress of funding provisions under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program and Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program both provide eligibility based on AFC designations. About FHWA AFC Corridor Designations

Designation of alternative fuel corridors supports installation of EV charging, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure at strategic locations along major national highways. These changes to the transportation system help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the mobility of passenger and commercial vehicles that employ these technologies across the United States. The FHWA updates and redesignates the corridors annually by soliciting nominations from state and local officials. The AFC corridor designation process responds to evolving vehicle technology, increased market adoption, and installation of alternative fuel infrastructure.
